The more rural community of Corral de Tierra lies along Highway 68, spanning half the distance between Salinas and the Monterey Peninsula. State Route 68 stretches spans of the DeAnza Trail, a route that once linked all of California’s mission settlements during the Spanish Colonial era.  The corner of Corral de Tierra and Highway 68 is 10 miles from the City of Monterey giving it close proximity to many coastal and inland cities. Here you can also find Corral de Tierra Country Club, a member-owned club with golf, dining, tennis, swimming, fitness and social activities.  Corral de Tierra Country Club is known both as a U.S. Open qualifier golf course and for having one of the strongest Junior Golf Programs in Monterey County.

Famous Author, John Steinbeck, wrote The Pastures of Heaven originally published in 1932 based on this valley. In their youth, Steinbeck and his sister, Mary, played at the base of Castle Rock, the “fence of earth” giving Corral de Tierra its Spanish name.
